Babies' meals in Netherlands

Marta  schreef op: 15-05-2013 13:42:24

Hello mums, I am italian, I live in France, and was lately in holiday in your beautiful country. Sorry I cannot speak dutch!
Emilio our 9 months old baby came with us in holidays, so I had to buy baby food for him in supermarkets.
I needed help so I asked to a dutch mother who was buying there too.
During the conversation, she told me babies are supposed to eat meat / fish only twice a week.
I could not ask for more details but I am so curious to learn more about that... is that true? How much meat / fish are they supposed to eat exactly every week? How are they fed the rest of the week?
I am asking because I find the French cuisine to be too centrated on meat, and I know every country has different rules for baby feeding, so I would like to learn about the "dutch way".... can you help?

Thanks a lot and hope to be back soon in beautiful Netherlands!

Marta,

I think it is not that difficult. Whether you feed a baby fish or meat once/twice or more times a week is up to your own choice. How do you feel about feeding you baby those products? The only thing you should guard is that you baby gets enough and the rigth nutrients. But instead of fish or meat, you can also use cheese, eggs or any other substitute. And what the Dutch lady told you, can be her guideline. But it is not a common guideline in our country. Some people eat strictly vegetarian, others prefer meat. It is the combination of nutrients that should be OK to enable your child to grow and develop.

I think my baby ate regular baby food (sometimes homemade, sometimes bought in the supermarket) every night. The only thing you need to be careful with is some ingredients: avoid salt, avoid using a lot of spices, and maybe avoid some fruits (like ehmm...... Let me ask our fellow members...)

For the Dutch girls: WIE WEET welke fruitsoorten/groentensoorten er door babies tot 1 jaar niet gegeten mogen worden?

sorry, he did not eat baby food... he ate just as we ate (only maybe chopped in smaller bites). In the supermarket you can buy it as baby food

Beter dan wat? Dan de NLse keuken? Zou goed kunnen

MARTA: maybe try not to feed your baby spinach and other vegetables with nitrate in them more than once a week

ok so maybe in your country there are not as precise guidelines as in France....

Here every doctor recommends a precise "formula", which is 30g of meat/fish at lunch (with vegetables/carbs), and cheese with vegetables/carbs for supper. Every day.
I thought you also had common guides shared by every doctor, but maybe the choice is more "free", up to any mum.

Marimammavanalec, sorry but I don't appreciate the italian guidelines very much for little babies: they use "meat/fish wheat" instead of fresh one, and they boil vegetables for hours... they use parmesan every day.... I personally prefer the French way, but still I am interested to learn all different habits.

P.S.: of course I was buying baby food just because we were on holidays, I usually cook at home!

We don't have special babyfood guidelines, the advise is about the same as food for infants and adult but in smaller portions and no salt added.
Children need proteïns for growth, but it don't have to be meat or fish, just milk is fine too. The main food for babies of the age of 9 months is breastmilk or formula, wich contains everything they need.
If your eating a healthy, varied diet yourself and normally the italian kitchen is, you can give that to your baby and so he learns all the different taste of good food and appreciate it.

M&j, all you wrote sounds very sensible!
Thank you for the clear answer.

(sorry I mistook one word in my last message... "meat/fish wheat" instead of "meat/fish flour".

I agree with M&j
And I've never fed my baby any meat or fish during the first year. I think it's very hard to digest for these young children, especially meat. Only fruit, vegetables, rice, eggs, pasta and bread.. and of course (breast) milk.
I used Gill Rapley's guidelines mostly

Maar ze heeft wel gelijk. Ik worden de groenten uren gekookt eer ze worden gegven. Zo zonde.
Daarintegen kun je waar ik woon (geldt niet voor heel Italie) geen potjes eten kopen
