How does late-night gaming affect early

My friends always want to queue for ranked matches after 10 PM, but as someone who naturally wakes up early, my reaction times completely tank by midnight and I feel miserable the next morning. Do early birds experience worse fatigue from late gaming than natural night owls, or is it just a matter of building tolerance?

Chronotypes dictate peak alertness windows, reaction times, and cognitive processing efficiency throughout the 24-hour cycle. Morning chronotypes ("early birds") experience a sharper decline in motor skills and mental acuity during late hours compared to evening types, making late-night gaming significantly more draining and harder to recover from biologically.

Early birds definitely take a much harder hit when gaming late because their body clocks are already pushing them toward deep sleep by that time. Trying to play twitch-reflex games past your peak window means you're fighting both natural fatigue and delayed reaction speeds. Even if you switch to lighter screen activities late at night—like checking item prices on DMarket or inspecting skins—the bright monitor and constant focus keep your mind locked in active mode. I came across https://alaskasleep.com/night-owls-and-early-birds-how-gaming-affects-sleep-chronotypes/, which explains how different chronotypes react to late-night screen exposure. If you're an early bird, forcing late-night queues or late screen browsing will constantly mess up your morning energy, so it's usually better to wrap things up earlier in the evening.
