Not the most innovative feature in the whole world of games. But Challenge a Friend option on wordleunlimited.dev website became one of my favorite ways of greeting my buddies, whom I haven't seen in a long time. Sending "how are you" message in any social network appears to be a very dull idea nowadays, and voice messages are even more irritating. But sending a challenge with the custom Wordle where the name of your friend will be used as a hidden word? This idea is so great because it is funny, personal, fast to prepare and shows your thoughtfulness without saying anything romantic. How Does the Custom Word Feature Work?As soon as you get familiar with the rules of this game, creation of your own challenge becomes quite easy. All you have to do is to go to Unlimited tab and press Challenge a Friend button; now you will see a form in front of you. Type your word (from 4 to 7 letters), type your name if you wish (it is not required), set the time limit (none, 20, 30 or 40 seconds) and enable hint button if needed. Then press on Create Challenge Link button and get the URL, which you will be able to share. No information about the game will be stored on the server; only the word itself will be transmitted via the link – and this feature makes me respect the developers of the game immensely. Now all your friend needs is to open the link and type in your custom word. Done. Why Does It Beat Regular Small Talks?Small talks were definitely ruined by text messaging. "Hey, what's up" will never receive any reply, "How's it going?" will give you only one-word answer, and any longer message is considered a homework. However, a game? One that takes 30 seconds and ends either in victory or in laughter? Such a challenge gets played every single time. I've sent my friends' challenges using their nicknames, my mother received a challenge with the word MANGO as it is her favorite fruit, this feature was used to start a dialogue with my colleague who left me with the strange impression after a recent meeting – it works. What Are the Little Design Details That Make It Fun?Why is the challenge option actually good and not just a gimmick? The level of customization under the surface of this game. Time limit option allows transforming a regular game into stress test whenever you want it. Hint toggle allows being a little nasty to your opponent whenever you need it. And since your friend sees whether you've enabled hints or not, there is a whole social aspect of your action which allows to communicate either "I believe you can do this" or "This one is really hard; here's a lifeboat for you". I've seen a whole chain among my friends' group, starting with one custom word and ending with numerous challenges thrown at each other within an hour. The Best Part about It Is the Reply LoopAnd the best part about this option is what happens after your friend guessed the word. There is a share button on the win page allowing them to send you the results of the pazzle game – how many attempts he/she/they made to guess the word, whether they've used hints or not. Thus, the challenge becomes a conversation. You send a word, they guess it, they inform you about the result, and voila: no awkward "hi, it's been a long time" from your side. I've challenged my cousin using the word PIZZA (as a reminder of the certain joke we shared), and she answered it with the same challenge using the old nickname of our high school teacher. True interaction created through a five-letter word game. Why Is It Better Than the Group Chat Meme?Group chat memes are cool, but they are passive: you are scrolling, laughing, and continuing your day. With a custom Wordle challenge, your friend has to spend some time on it, thinking of the answer and tapping the buttons. That tiny moment of his/her/their attention is the whole point of the "hi" message, isn't it? Saying hi means creating a tiny moment when you both show up for each other. Wordle Unlimited turned this boring social task into something I really like to send. ConclusionIf you feel like your friend group went silent or you don't know how to reach out to someone without making a fuss, just send them a custom Wordle challenge using the word that means something to both of you – their name, some inside joke, or just a random food you both like. Seemingly like a tiny thing, but that's how it became my favorite way to say hi in this world, where "hi" started to seem like too much effort. |
